Old Photograph Bank Street Airdrie Scotland

Old photograph of shops, buildings, town house and people on Bank Street in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. This Scottish town is located approximately 12 miles East of Glasgow city centre. A significant event in Airdrie's history was the 1695 passing of a special Act of Parliament in the Scottish Parliament allowing Robert Hamilton of Airdrie to hold four fairs yearly and a weekly market in the town of Airdry. This helped develop Airdrie from a farm town into a thriving market town. However, Airdrie really came to prominence through its weaving industry. Airdrie Weavers Society was founded in 1781 and flax was being grown in sixteen farms in and around the burgh. In the last decade of the eighteenth century, coal mining was in progress and around thirty colliers were employed. Weaving continued to flourish making up a substantial part of the population of over 2,500 around the turn of the 19th century. Given its large number of weavers, its geographic location, and a large number of unemployed soldiers following the end of the Napoleonic Wars, Airdrie became a major centre of support for the Radical War of 1820. The rapid pace of population growth continued and by 1821 there were 4,862 inhabitants. At this time the number of houses being built increased dramatically and in 1821, by a private Act of Parliament, Airdrie became a free and independent Burgh of Barony. Due to the fact it was 'independent', it had all the powers of a Royal Burgh. In 1824 it was decided to build the Town House, which was originally designed by Alexander Baird and is now a local landmark known as the town clock. In 1832 the Town House was used as a hospital due to the cholera outbreak of this year. By 1850, the population had grown to 12,418. The enormous growth in population was not due to high birthrate, but instead due to an influx of residents from the Highlands and predominantly Ireland. This followed the Highland potato famine of the mid 1840s and also reflected the change from cottage industry to heavy industry in the area. Most of the Irish immigrant population were involved with mining and labouring.

Old Photograph Flemington Rows Cambuslang Scotland

Old photograph of houses on Flemington Rows street in Cambuslang, a suburban town on the south eastern outskirts of Glasgow, Scotland. Cambuslang is an ancient part of Scotland where Iron Age remains loom over 21st century housing developments. The local geography explains a great deal of its history. It has been very prosperous over time, depending first upon its agricultural land, supplying food, then wool, then linen, then the mineral resources under its soil, limestone and coal, and, to some extent, iron. These were jealously guarded by the medieval Church, and later by the local aristocracy, particularly the Duke of Hamilton, previously Barons of Cadzow and Earls of Arran. Because of its relative prosperity, Cambuslang has been intimately concerned in the politics of the country, through the Hamilton connection, and of the local Church. Bishop John Cameron of Glasgow, the Scottish King's first minister, and Cardinal Beaton, a later first minister, were both Rectors of Cambuslang. This importance continued following the Protestant Reformation. From then until the Glorious Revolution a stream of Ministers of Cambuslang came, were expelled, or were re-instated, according to whether supporters of the King, Covenanters, or Oliver Cromwell were in power. The religious movements of the 18th century, including the Cambuslang Wark, were directly linked to similar movements in North America. The Scottish Enlightenment was well represented in the person of Rev Dr James Meek, the Minister. His troubles with his parishioners foreshadowed the split in the Church of Scotland during the 19th century. The manufacturing industries that grew up from the agricultural and mineral resources attracted immigrants from all over Scotland and Ireland and other European countries. Cambuslang benefited at all times from its closeness to the burgeoning city of Glasgow, brought closer in the 18th century by a turnpike road then, in the 19th century, by a railway.

Old Photograph Blacksmiths In Galashiels Scotland

Old photograph of Blacksmiths in Galashiels, Scottish Borders of Scotland. Robert Burns wrote two poems about Galashiels, " Sae Fair Her Hair " and " Braw Lads ". The latter is sung by the some of the townsfolk each year at the Braw Lads Gathering. Sir Walter Scott built his home, Abbotsford, just across the River Tweed from Galashiels. The Sir Walter Scott Way, a long distance walking path from Moffat to Cockburnspath passes through Galashiels. Andrew John Herbertson was born on 11 October 1865 in Galashiels. He went to school locally at Galashiels Academy and in Edinburgh at Edinburgh Institution. From 1886 to 1889 he studied in the University of Edinburgh, but he never gained a degree. He then gained a place at Oxford University where he graduated MA. In 1892 he went with Patrick Geddes to Dundee to teach botany. in 1892 he was made a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society. He then moved in 1892 to Fort William, Scotland to work on a metereological observatory on Ben Nevis. In 1894 he moved to Manchester to become a lecturer in political and commercial geography in the University of Manchester, England. In 1898 he received a doctorate from University of Freiburg-im-Breisgau. In 1899 he moved to the University of Oxford to become a reader of geography; then became the first Oxford Professor of Geography in 1905. He would become head of the geography department at Oxford in 1910. In 1908 he was made a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society. He died of a heart attack on 15 July 1915 in Radnage, Buckinghamshire. He is buried with his wife Frances Dorothy, who died two weeks later, in Holywell Cemetery nearby. Their son, Lt. Andrew Hunter Herbertson, was killed at Arras in the First World War in May 1917.

Old Photograph Falls of Halladale Ship River Clyde Scotland

Old photograph of Falls of Halladale ship in the River Clyde by Glasgow, Scotland. The Falls of Halladale was a four masted iron hulled barque that was built in 1886 for the long distance bulk carrier trade. She was built for the Falls Line, Wright, Breakenridge and Company, Glasgow, at the shipyard of Russell and Company, Greenock on the River Clyde, she was named after a rather small waterfall on the Halladale River in the Caithness district of Scotland. The Falls of Halladale is best known for her spectacular demise in a shipwreck near Peterborough, Victoria on the shipwreck coast of Victoria, Australia. On the night of 14 November 1908 she was sailed in dense fog directly onto the rocks due to a navigational error. The crew of 29 abandoned ship safely and all made it ashore by boat, leaving the ship foundering with her sails unfurled. For weeks after the wreck large crowds gathered to view the ship as she gradually broke up and then sank in the shallow water. Soon after the accident the ship's master, Captain David Wood Thomson, was brought before a Court of Marine Inquiry in Melbourne and found guilty of a gross act of misconduct, having carelessly navigated the ship, having neglected to take proper soundings, and having failed to place the ship on a port tack before it became too late to avoid the shipwreck. Captain Thomson's punishment included a small fine and he had his Certificate of Competency as a Master suspended for six months.

Old Photograph Police Station Thurso Scotland

Old photograph of the Police Station in Thurso, Caithness, Scotland. George Finlayson was born in Thurso in 1790. He was a Scottish naturalist and traveller. He was called one of the best naturalists of his day, and was noted for his pioneering studies of the plants, animals, and people of southern Thailand and the Malay peninsula. He was clerk to Dr. Somerville, chief of the army medical staff in Scotland, and afterwards to Dr. Farrel, chief of the army medical staff in Ceylon. He was then transferred to Bengal, and attached to the 8th Light Dragoons as assistant surgeon in 1819. In 1821 he accompanied the Crawfurd trade mission to Siam, now Thailand, and Cochin China, now Vietnam, as naturalist, returning with it to Calcutta in 1823. By this time his health was thoroughly broken. He died on the passage from Bengal to Scotland in August 1823. The journal which he had kept during the mission was edited, with a prefatory note on the author, by Sir Stamford Raffles, F.R.S., and published in 1826 under the title The Mission to Siam and Hue, the capital of Cochin China, in the years 1821 to 1822, from the Journal of the late George Finlayson, Esq. The bird stripe throated bulbul, Pycnonotus finlaysoni, is named in Finlayson's honour. George died in 1823.
