Tour Scotland Video King's Knot Gardens Below Stirling Castle

Tour Scotland video of the The King's Knot gardens below Stirling Castle, Stirling, Scotland. The Castle of Stirling first emerges into the light of history in the time of Alexander I who, according to a document of the following reign, dedicated a chapel there. Alexander died at the Castle in 1124 and was succeeded by his brother David, who frequently stayed at Stirling. Below the castle are the grassy outlines of a much bigger formal garden. This is the King’s Knot, the knot itself being a raised eight sided feature dating from the 1600s.

The beautiful region which contains Loch Lomond and the Trossachs has long been a magnet for visitors. It was already popular when Sir Walter Scott made it world-famous. Here are the stories of the people who came to it, why they came, how they travelled and what they found. Most visitors came as tourists: they included Wordsworth, Mendelssohn, Hans Andersen, even Queen Victoria herself. Others came in the course of their work: sixth-century saints brought Christianity, redcoats - and sailors - pursued Rob Roy, politicians and engineers came to revive the fortunes of Scotland with hydro-electricity after the Second World War. The region is notable for variety in means of travel. Tourists a century ago found an intricate network of connecting trains, steamers and horse-drawn coaches, by which they could range about the region with greater facility than their descendants can today. This too is fully described. The story of how Loch Lomond and the fast-flowing River Leven were used as a highway for trade and commerce, by galleys, birlinns, sailing gabbarts and, on the loch, paddle-steamers, is told more comprehensively here than anywhere else. Loch Lomond and the Trossachs in History and Legend.

Old Photograph Housekeeper Perth Scotland

Old photograph of a housekeeper with a bowl of porridge in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. The Housekeeper was the principal female servant. She was also often in charge of the household accounts, tradesmen's bills, orderly running of the house, and ensured that the house was clean. She was also responsible for the servants' accommodation. The Victorian period in Britain saw a peak in the numbers of servants employed in households. All upper class houses had several servants, and most middle class households aspired to have at least one or two servants. In 1871 over 4% of the population was employed 'in service', the vast majority of them women.

Old Photographs Castlebay Barra Scotland

Old photograph of Castlebay, Island of Barra, Scotland.

Old photograph of Kisimul Castle, Castlebay, Island of Barra, Scotland. The earliest documentary record of Kisimul Castle dates from the mid 16th century. As Kisimul is completely surrounded by the sea, it can only be reached by boat making the fortification impregnable but it has its own fresh water wells. Kisimul was abandoned in 1838 when the island was sold, and the castle's condition deteriorated. Some of its stone was used as ballast for fishing vessels, and some even ended up as paving in Glasgow. The remains of the castle, along with most of the island of Barra, were purchased by the chief of Clan MacNeill in 1937, who made efforts at restoration. In 2001 the castle was leased by the chief of Clan MacNeil to Historic Scotland for 1000 years for the annual sum of £1 and a bottle of whisky.

Old Photograph Lighthouse Boddam Scotland

Old photograph of the lighthouse at Boddam near Peterhead, Scotland. The area around the headland of Buchan Ness was for many centuries the point from which trading and whaling voyages departed across open ocean, bound for Archangel, Greenland and Spitsbergen amongst other destinations. Over time, many vessels had been run aground in poor weather and in 1819 petitions were sent to the Northern Lighthouse Board to erect a lighthouse in the vicinity. As Engineer to the board, Robert Stevenson decided upon the present location; the granite-built construction being completed in 1825 and the light established in 1827.
