Tour Scotland Video Catriona Houston Soprano Cathedral Perth Perthshire

Tour Scotland video of Catriona Houston in St Ninian's Cathedral in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. Catriona, a soprano, singing Una donna a quindici anni from Cosi fan tutte in St Ninian's Cathedral which was built on the site of an older Dominican monastery and was one of the first to be built in Britain since the Reformation.

The Houston name is territorial in origin, derived from an old barony of the name in Lanarkshire. Hugh de Padinan, who is believed to have lived in the twelfth century, was granted the lands of Kilpeter. By about the middle of the fourteenth century, these lands had become known as Huston. Sir Finlay de Hustone appears on the Ragman Roll swearing fealty to King Edward I of England in 1296. The castle of the de Hustones was built on the site of an ancient Cistercian abbey. The family also acquired a substantial barony near Whitburn, West Lothian, where Huston House, which was rebuilt in the eighteenth century, still stands today. Sir Patrick Hustone of that Ilk, who was probably the eleventh chief, married Agnes Campbell of Ardkinglas. During the Anglo Scottish Wars, Sir Peter Huston fought with the Earl of Lennox on the right wing at Battle of Flodden Field in 1513, where he was killed. His son, Sir Patrick Huston of Huston, was a companion of King James V of Scotland and Keeper of the Quarter Seal. He intrigued with Lord Lennox against the king, and was slain at the Battle of Linlithgow. The next Sir Patrick, his grandson, was knighted by Mary, Queen of Scots, and accompanied her when she visited Lord Darnley in Glasgow. The nineteenth chief was created a Baronet of Nova Scotia by Charles II in 1668. His son, Sir John, was falconer to Queen Mary and her husband, King William of Orange. The fifth Baronet was a prosperous merchant who had substantial interests in United States. His son, who was educated in Glasgow, made his home in Georgia, America, and he and his brother greatly increased the family's colonial estates. They are reputed to have owned over eight thousand slaves when the thirteen American colonies broke from Great Britain and declared their independence. The Hustons renounced their Scottish titles in favour of their American wealth. From this family descended General Sam Houston, born in 1793, who fought for the independence of Texas from Mexico. He was first president of Texas and later a United States Senator. Sir Robert Houston, descended from a Renfrew branch of the family, was a prominent Victorian shipowner who was created a baronet of the United Kingdom. He is credited with developing the theory of convoys first used during the Boer War.

Tour Scotland Photographs Reflections Frozen Pond Perth Perthshire February 3rd

Tour Scotland photograph shot this morning of reflections in a frozen pond in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. Kinnoull Parish Church reflected in a frozen pond at 11am this morning. The earliest recorded reference to Kinnoull Parish Church appears in Bagimond's Roll, a Papal taxation, of 1287. Although in the diocese of St Andrew's, it was not one of the churches mentioned as having been consecrated by Bishop David de Bainha in the middle of the 13th century. However, this is not to say that the parish did not exist or that there was not a church. The site of the original church building is uncertain. The "old church" at Wellbank, vacated on entry to the present building, was itself a renovation, carried out in 1779, of an earlier building on the same site. This building must have been in existence in 1635 since the statue of the first Earl of Kinnoull was erected in it in that year. The "old church" with its statue and graveyard now form an integral part of the Norie Miller Walk.

Tour Scotland Video Kelty Clippie Folk Night Wheel Inn Scone Perthshire

Tour Scotland video of Andrew Gordon singing Kelty Clippie at the Wheel Inn in Scone by Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. This song was written by John Watt, a friend of mine, who passed away recently.

I have travelled o'er this country, from shore to shining shore
Frae the swamps o' Ochardarren tae the jungles o' Loch Ore
But in all these far flung places, there's nane that can compare
Wi' my lily o' Long Finnin, she's my bonny Maggie Blair

Chorus:
Oh she's just a Kelty Cilppie, she'll no take na advice
And it's ach! Drop died or we'll boil your heid and I'll punch your ticket twice
Her Father's just a waster, her Mother's on the gain
She's just a Kelty Cilppie and I love her just the same

Well I met her on the eight-fifteen that night o' romantic bliss
Says I, "Hey, Mag, put doon your fag and gi'e us a wee bit kiss."
Noo she didna tak' this kindly, she didna like my chaff
And being a contrary kind of lass, she said, "Come on, get off!"

Chorus

Frae the pyramids up at Kelty, tae the mansions of Glenn Craig
We've trod the banks together and many of life's travails
Seen the moonlight over Crosshill, trod Buckhiem's golden sands
And many a happy hoor we spent in Loch Gelly's happy land

Chorus

Now she has na got na culture, she drives me roond the bend
She sits at night in her old arm chair, reading the people's friend
Her lapel is full of badges, fray bodlens doon her ears
And she gangs tae the bingo every night with the curlers still in her hair

Chorus

Ah, but things are a wee bit better now, I've gone and I've got the ring
I won it frae Robin at the pitch and toss last night at the Lindsay Bing
Wi' her wee black bag and her ticket machine, she did my heart ensare
She's my lily o' Long Finnin, she's my bonny Maggie Blair

Chorus

In 1446, Rosslyn Chapel was constructed, under the guide of William Sinclair, 1st Earl of Caithness. Roslin became important as the seat of the St. Clair family. In 1456 King James II granted it the status of a burgh. Coal mining has been a major occupation from the twelfth to the late twentieth centuries.

Old photograph of Fishwives in Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland. Fish always formed a large part of the food of the people of the area, and, down to the early days of the nineteenth century, was almost the only meat the poorer classes could afford. Newhaven was the chief source of this supply. For centuries, before the days of railways, the fishwives of Newhaven travelled to their Edinburgh customers by Whiting Loan, through Broughton village and up Leith Wynd, where, they entered the High Street by the Netherbow Port.

Tour Scotland Video The Ferryland Sealer Folk Night Wheel Inn Scone Perthshire

Tour Scotland video of Andrew Gordon singing The Ferryland Sealer at the Wheel Inn in Scone by Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. Andrew singing at a Folk Night, Burns Night in my village of Scone.

Oh, our schooner and our sloop in Ferryland they do lie
They are already rigged to be bound for the ice
All you lads of the Southern we will have you to beware
She is going to the ice in the Spring of the year

[Chorus:]

Laddie whack fall the laddie, laddie whack fall the day

Our course be east-north-east for two days and two nights
Our captain he cried out "Boys, look ahead for the ice!"
He hove her about standing in for the land,
And 'twas in a few hours we were firm in the jam.

Oh our captain he cried out, "Come on boys and lend a hand!"
Our cook he gets the breakfast and each man takes a dram.
With their hats in their hands it was earlye for to go,
Every man showed his action 'thout the missing of a blow

Some were killing some were scalping, some were hauling on board,
Some more they were firing and a-missing of their loads.
In the dusk of the evening all hands in from the cold,
And we counted nine hundred fine scalps in the hold.

We are now off Cape Spear and in sight of Cape Broyle
We will dance, sing, carouse, my boys, in just a little while.
We will soon enjoy the charms of our sweethearts and friends,
But it will not be long before we're down to the bend.

Old Photograph Delivery Cart Scotland

Old photograph of a Delivery Cart in West Lothian, Scotland. In pre industrial times West Lothian was almost entirely agricultural. In the way of heavy industry there was a silver mine at Cairnpapple, a cotton mill at Blackburn, paper mills at Linlithgow, and shallow coal mines around Bathgate and Whitburn. The county was radically changed by the Industrial Revolution, with the opening of deep pit iron, coal, and shale oil mines, as well as foundries and brickworks. Many of the houses built for the expanding population were shoddy, necessitating the building of thousands of new houses in the latter part of the 20th century.

Old Photographs Comrie Perthshire Scotland

Old photograph of Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. Comrie's early prosperity derived from weaving. This was mostly done as piecework in people's own cottages and houses. Comrie was also important as a droving town. Highland Cattle destined for the markets of the Scottish Lowlands and ultimately England would be driven south from their grazing areas in the Highlands. River crossings, such as at Comrie, were important staging posts on the way south. Much of the land around Comrie was owned by the Drummond family, Earls of Perth, latterly Earls of Ancaster, whose main seat was Drummond Castle, south of Crieff. Another branch of the Drummonds owned Drummondernoch, to the west of the town. Aberuchill Castle, however, just outside Comrie was originally a Campbell seat. Comrie underwent something of a renaissance in the early 19th century and Victorian periods as an attractive location for wealthy residents and visitors. Robert the Bruce, king of Scotland, the outlaw Rob Roy McGregor and Scotland's internationally renowned national poet Robert Burns all mentioned their stays in the village Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.

Old Photographs Galston Ayrshire Scotland

Old photograph of Galston, East Ayrshire, Scotland. Tour Ayr and Kilmarnock. The name Galston means " place of the strangers " from the Gaelic word Gall, a stranger, and the Toun or Ton was a farm and its outbuildings. John Goldie, miscellaneous writer, was born in the parish of Galston in 1717 ; he moved to Kilmarnock, where he carried on the business of cabinetmaker, subsequently of wine merchant. He is author of a volume entitled Essays on Various Subjects, humorously known as Goldie’s Bible, and is held in grateful memory as a friend of Robert Burns. He died in 1809. The 17th century Presbyterians were against burials taking place within churches. In 1609 John Schaw of Sornbeg decided to bury his recently-deceased wife within Galston Church. He entered the kirk with a party of armed men and proceeded to break up flagstones and dig a grave where he interred his wife's body. He was fined £20 for this action and promised never to attempt this act again. Handball was popular in these parts during the 19th century and Galston was the site of the most important competition, held on the Saturday of the Glasgow Fair. Cessnock castle by Galston, dates from around the 15th Century. The Duke of Portland had it restored by 1900 and is now a private house. After her defeat at the battle of Langside, Mary Queen of Scots is reputed to have taken refuge there. Other visitors of note include the reformist preacher John Knox and the poet Robert Burns.
