MacFarlane, McFarlane, MacFarlan, McFarlan, MacFarland, MacFarlin, McParland, McParlin, and others, is an ancient Scottish surname, and one that is also recorded in Ireland. It probably originates from the Gaelic MacPharlain, meaning " The son of Parlan ", a form which apparently derives from " Bartholmew ", a name introduced into Europe by the returning crusaders from the Holy land in the 12th century. The name is first recorded in Scotland in the 14th Century, and an early example is that of Andrew McFarlane, who in 1577 was elected a Burgess of Glasgow. The development of the name has included Makfarlande in 1546, M'Farlen in 1603, and MacPharline in 1610. Examples taken from surviving church registers include Dugall McFarlane who married Helena Wallace at Cannongate, Edinburgh, on June 15th 1653, and Alexander McFarlan who was born on September 3rd 1730, also at Edinburgh. The first recorded spelling of the family name may be that of Malcolm McPharlane. This was dated 1385, when he was a charter witness to Duncan, earl of Leuenax in 1385.

Tour Scotland Video Croft Moraig Stone Circle Near Aberfeldy Perthshire

Tour Scotland video of Croft Moraig Stone Circle, Perthshire, Scotland. Croft Moraig, near Aberfeldy in Perthshire, with its concentric rings and outliers on an artificial platform. The history of the site is known from an excavation in 1965: Aout 5000 years ago, a horseshoe arrangement of fourteen wide wooden posts was erected in an ellipse 7 metres by 8 metres. This was surrounded by a ditch. The posts were later replaced by eight stones of graded height. Another smaller stone stood just outside. Some neolithic pottery was found related to this phase of the site. A rubble bank was created outside the stones and cup-marked stones added that aligned with the southern moonset and the midsummer sunrise. A twelve metre diameter circle of twelve large stones was constructed and a couple of large outlying stones added.

Tour Scotland Video Belly Dancing Royal Mile Festival Fringe Edinburgh

Tour Scotland video of Belly Dancing on the Royal Mile at the Festival Fringe on visit to Edinburgh, Scotland. These wonderful dancers are from Spain. The term belly dance is a translation of the French term danse du ventre, which was applied to the dance in the Victorian era, and probably originally referred to the Arabic tribe Ouled Nail dancers of Algeria, whose dance used more abdominal movements than the dances described today as belly dance. It is something of a misnomer, as every part of the body is involved in the dance; the most featured body part is usually the hips.
