St Andrews. The Home of Golf. This is a lavish, full-colour exploration of the Scottish town whose name is synonymous with golf. St Andrews - once Scotland's greatest city, the cradle of its religion and the birthplace of its first university; today the ancient burg is known the world over as the spiritual home of golf, a place that evokes images of windswept seaside links and legendary golfing champions. "St Andrews: The Home of Golf" celebrates this unique haven of the game through striking pictures by renowned golf photographer Kevin Murray, while the authors' blend of history, personal observations and anecdotes distills centuries of golfing tradition into lively, atmospheric prose. Combined, they capture the immortal nature of all that is best about golf embodied in one of its most important and beautiful locations. As the Open Championship returns to St Andrews in 2010, "St Andrews: The Home of Golf" marks the 150th anniversary of golf's oldest and most prestigious tournament with a lavish visual journey along the medieval city's bustling cobbled streets, through the doors of many prestigious golf clubs residing within its venerable greystone walls, and around each one of St Andrews' several great courses - from the famous Old Course to the stunning new Castle Course. For those who know and love St Andrews, this book will evoke fond memories. For those still to make the pilgrimage and walk in the footsteps of golf's greatest players, "St Andrews: The Home of Golf" is a must-read that no lover of the game should be without. Putting to sea in all weathers, its crews are on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Edward Wake-Walker describes 16 dramatic rescues spanning 200 years in the RNLI's distinguished history. The earliest story is that of Sir William Hillary, founder of the RNLI, who rescued all 17 crew and passengers from the Fortroendet aground in 1827. A more recent account concerns helicopter winch man, Bill Deacon, who died after saving the last ten men from the freighter Green Lily in a hurricane in 1997, and coxswain Hewitt Clark who brought his lifeboat alongside the ship and saved five of her crew. Exploring Scotland's Freshwater Lochs. Found mainly in the Highlands the hundreds of freshwater lochs that can be seen in Scotland today were shaped millions of years ago by the erosive power of the glacial ice sheets that once covered the northern part of Britain. Their waters are rich in marine life and their shores are rich in flora and fauna, wild, remote and steeped in history, the many freshwater lochs of Scotland are among the most unspoilt and beautiful destinations to be found anywhere in Britain. Exploring Scotland's Freshwater Lochs is the first book to delve into the fascinating stories surrounding these lochs, from hidden monsters and secret islands to buried treasure and ruined castles, this book has it all. Compiled by author and photographer Julian Holland, well known for his best-selling Exploring the Islands of Scotland, this book will for the first time give an insight into the historical background and natural history of over 30 freshwater lochs. Illustrated with specially commissioned colour photographs and supported by useful location maps, the book includes details on what see and visit, walks, cycle rides, boat trips, fishing and watersports. Essential information on how to get there, car parking, accommodation, public transport and which maps to take will make this an essential tool for every loch explorer. From remote Loch Coruisk set in the Black Cuillins of Skye and the prison of Mary, Queen of Scots in the middle of Loch Leven to the sinister depths of Loch Morar and the famous monster of Loch Ness there is a loch to suit every taste in this book. The Forth Bridge has long been recognised as one of the finest examples of Victorian engineering on the planet and has achieved an iconic status as one of the great feats of western civilisation since its official opening in 1890. Lavishly illustrated throughout with stunning archive images, Elspeth Wills uncovers the human story behind 'the engineering marvel': the story of the Briggers. It is a story that has never been told before - of ordinary men working on an extraordinary structure in an often hostile and dangerous environment. Recognised throughout the world as an enduring icon of Scotland, the Forth Bridge is more than just a testament to the genius of Victorian engineering, it is a monument to all those who worked to realise its vision and to the scores of lives that were lost in the process. In this groundbreaking new work, Elspeth Wills gives a voice to the forgotten heroes who helped to make the ambition of the Bridge a reality.
