Old Photograph Strathaven Castle Scotland

Old photograph of Strathaven Castle, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The origins of this Scottish castle are obscure, but it is thought to have been built around 1350 by the Bairds, on a bend of the Powmillon Burn. Later the castle passed to the Sinclairs and then to the Earls of Douglas. After the suppression of the Earls of Douglas by James II in 1455, the castle was sacked and slighted. Little or nothing of the early castle remains. In 1457 Strathaven was granted to Sir Andrew Stewart, an illegitimate grandson of Murdoch Stewart, Duke of Albany. Stewart, who later became Lord Avondale, either rebuilt the earlier castle, or built a new castle on the same site. In 1534 it passed to Sir James Hamilton of Finnart, who expanded the buildings. A letter of 1559 mentions that it was here, at 'Straverin', that Master Patrick Buchanan, brother of George Buchanan, taught the children of Regent Arran.

It changed hands one last time in 1611, when the castle was sold to James, Marquis of Hamilton. The last occupant was Anne, Duchess of Hamilton (1632-1716), whose main residence was Hamilton Palace. The castle was abandoned in 1717.

Old Photograph Pearl Fisher Scotland

Old photograph of a Pearl Fisher in Perthshire, Scotland. There has been pearl fishing in Scotland for centuries. First mentions of British pearls come from the time of Julius Caesar. Tacitus noted that the pearls from Britain were dusky or brownish. In 1355 Scottish pearls were being exported to Paris, France, as there is a statue from that time of the Parisian Goldsmiths saying that gold and silver smiths were not to set Scottish pearls alongside Oriental ones. The only exception being for large projects such as for churches, where it probably was not possible to acquire sufficient Oriental pearls without an item becoming too expensive.

Tour Scotland Photograph Painting Medieval Perth

Tour Scotland photograph of a painting of Medieval Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. The name Perth derives from a Pictish word for wood or copse, and links the town to the Picts described by the Romans, who subsequently joined with the Scots to form the kingdom of Alba which later became known as Scotland. During much of the medieval period the town was known colloquially as " St. John's Toun " or " Saint Johnstoun " because the church at the centre of the parish was dedicated to St. John the Baptist. Perth's Pictish name, and some archaeological evidence, indicate that there must have been a settlement here from earlier times, probably at a point where a river crossing or crossings coincided with a slightly raised natural mound on the west bank of the River Tay, thus giving some protection for settlement from the frequent flooding. The presence of Scone two miles north east, a royal centre of Alba from at least the reign of Kenneth I mac Ailpín, later the site of the major Augustinian abbey of the same name founded by King Alexander I, will have enhanced Perth's early importance. It was for long the effective ' capital ' of Scotland, due to the frequent residence of the royal court. It was at Scone Abbey that the Stone of Destiny was kept, and on it the Kings of Scots were crowned down to king Alexander III.

Old Photographs Langholm Scotland

Old photograph of Langholm, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. This Scottish town is also known colloquially as the " Muckle Toon ". The town grew around the textile industry, but is now best known as the birthplace of Scottish poet, journalist, essayist and political figure, Hugh MacDiarmid and Scottish civil engineer, architect and stonemason, and a noted road, bridge and canal builder, Thomas Telford. The town was an important centre for the Border Reivers. The Border reivers were raiders along the Anglo-Scottish border from the late 13th century to the beginning of the 17th century. Their ranks consisted of both Scottish and English families, and they raided the entire Border country without regard to their victims' nationality. Their heyday was perhaps in the last hundred years of their existence, during the time of the Stewart Kings in Scotland and the Tudor dynasty in England.

Old Photograph Armadale Scotland

Old photograph of the railway station at Armadale, West Lothian, Scotland. The station opened on 11 August 1862. It was opened by the Bathgate and Coatbridge Railway which was then absorbed by the North British Railway. Becoming part of the London and North Eastern Railway during the Grouping of 1923, it passed on to the Scottish Region of British Railways on nationalisation in 1948, and was then closed by the British Transport Commission with the withdrawal of passenger services on 8 January 1956. The station was reopened as part of the Airdrie-Bathgate Rail Link. The Airdrie-Bathgate Rail link was a project created to enable Glasgow and Edinburgh to be linked via a fourth route by reopening the railway between the towns of Airdrie and Bathgate. However, the very severe winter weather of November and December 2010 delayed completion of construction work, and the station was initially served by a replacement bus service. The station was re-opened on 4 March 2011.

Old Photograph Cromarty Firth Scotland

Old photograph of a fishing boat in the Cromarty Firth, Scotland. This is an arm of the North Sea in Scotland. It is the middle of the three sea lochs at the head of the Moray Firth: to the north lies the Dornoch Firth, and to the south the Beauly Firth. At its head the Firth receives its principal river, the River Conon, other rivers include the Allt Graad, Peffery, Sgitheach, Averon and Balnagown. The Dingwall Canal remains connected to the Firth, although it is now disused. The principal settlements on its shores are Dingwall near the head, Cromarty near the mouth, from which the Firth takes its name, and Invergordon on the north shore. The villages of Evanton, Alness and Culbokie are nearby. There is one bridge, the A9 road crossing between Ardullie and Findon. In the past there were several ferries across the firth, for example at Foulis, but now there is only one, a four car ferry that runs between Cromarty and Nigg during the summer.
