The Isle of Skye occupies an almost mythical place in the minds of many Scots. Romantic castles, magnificent sea-scapes, the alpine peaks of the Cuillin Ridge, marching pipe bands, scattered white crofters' cottages and a bloody history; the island has all these and more. This book features 40 moderate walks that take in much of this celebrated landscape, but reveal hidden gems too. In spite of its popularity Skye is still rich in undiscovered treasures, from coastal caves and arches, ruined villages cruelly cleared of their inhabitants, to fossilised dinosaur footprints and a rich array of wildlife. Written by Skye residents Paul and Helen Webster, these walks will reveal both the wild and gentler sides of this dramatic landscape. Isle of Skye: 40 Coast and Country Walks (Pocket Mountains).

Tour Scotland Photograph Cill Chriosd Graveyard

Tour Scotland photograph of Cill Chriosd graveyard, Isle of Skye, Scotland. Records from 1913 show that there were originally a pair of unusual grave markers in the cemetery. one dedicated to Chief Lachlan Mor, the other possibly dating from the pre-Christian era. However, both have since vanished. Most graves are connected to Clan MacKinnon, and are from the 18th and 19th centuries. One memorial, in the inner wall of the burial enclosure, is for Charles Third, who was apparently born in Corry near Broadford as a MacKinnon but later died in Australia after emigrating. A worn medieval slab carved with an ornate cross is located in the south corner of the graveyard. The churchyard also has an amorial stone, as well as a possible fragment of the necking and lower arms of a crude cross, with one side plane and the other side bearing two animals carved into a relief on the lower portion. The graveyard also contains a slab of slate with a foliated cross, with one side preserved but the other side worn away.

The distillery in the village produces The Bunnahabhain (Boon-a-havn) which is one of the milder Islay whiskies available and its taste varies greatly from other spirits to be found on the island of Islay, off the west coast of Scotland. The distillery was built in 1881 and sits below the northeast tip of the island just north of Port Askaig. It overlooks a narrow belt of water, the Sound of Islay, with a view of the neighbouring island of Jura, which also has a working distillery, and its famous hills, the Paps of Jura.
