This new edition covers more than 2700 castles as well as mansions and historic houses, all alphabetically organised, with detailed maps, visiting information, illustrations, and anecdotes of hauntings and family histories. He has travelled from the Mull of Galloway in the south to the tip of Unst in the Shetlands, the northernmost point in the British Isles, and from remote St Kilda out in the Atlantic to the Sands of Forvie National Nature Reserve on the North Sea to capture the enormous variety of scenery that characterises the Scottish seacoast. Some of the sites he has photographed, like St Kilda or the sandstone peaks overlooking Loch Torridon, belong to the National Trust for Scotland, but many others are privately owned; some, like the majestic Cuillins on Skye, are well-known to tourists, others are hidden coves or remote sea stacks that few visitors will ever have seen. Whatever the subject, be it a wide Hebridean vista or fragmentary patterns of ice on a frozen beach, Joe Cornish, with his artist's eye and his dramatic use of light, helps us to look at it afresh and reveals new and unsuspected beauties. In the text which accompanies his photographs he explains the aspects of each particular landscape that made it special to him, its geology, its flora, its history or its associations. The result is a stunning book book which will delight Cornish's legion of admirers and all those who have found enchantment on Scotland's wonderful coastline. Scotland's Coast: A Photographer's Journey.

October 31st Autumn photograph of Balmerino Abbey, North East Fife, Scotland. In 1565 Mary Queen of Scots was a visitor at the abbey and more than likely lived in the abbot’s house as a guest of Sir John Hay. In 1603 the lands were erected into a temporal lordship by Sir James Elphinstone, first lord of Balmerino. However, the lordship seems to have been tainted with misfortune: both the first and second Lords of Balmerino were sentenced to death and the sixth and last was beheaded as a Jacobite in France in 1746.

Floral Art structures are the in-thing. They make a base for decoration and can be used over and over again. Gil Boyard and Muriel le Couls, both Meilleur Ouvrier de France(Best Craftsman of France), designed structures for tables, buffets and halls. Firstly they elaborately present the structure in situ. Afterwards they decorate them in three completely different ways, in order to demonstrate the countless possibilities for re-use. This book is brimming with creative ideas. Floral Art Structures.

October 29th Photograph Hot Air Balloon Scotland

October 29th morning photograph of the Virgin Hot Air Balloon over Scone, Perthshire, Scotland.

All photographs are copyright of Sandy Stevenson, Tour Scotland, and may not be used without permission.

On September 19, 1783, thousands of people visited Versailles to witness the launching of the Montgolfier brothers' new fangled hot-air balloon. Ballooning's first brave passengers, as it turns out, were a duck, a sheep and a rooster. Priceman sets the stage for this historic event in the funniest, breeziest way imaginable, imploring readers to pay no mind to the hows and whys but instead to focus on the brave passengers, hilariously depicted as bug-eyed with fear, shown from above as the balloon goes up, up and away. From here on out, the book is almost wordless, presenting the trembling trio in comic strip-like panels as the barnyard animals become entangled in flyaway laundry and encounter various dangerously pointy objects, from a boy's mischievous arrow, it proves helpful later, to a church spire, softened by an aforementioned sock, to the sharp-beaked bird who ultimately sends them spiraling. Priceman's wonderful, vivacious black-ink and watercolor paintings-packed with comical details, add motion and buoyancy to an already soaring tale of a historic hot-air balloon ride. Hot Air: The Mostly True Story of the First Hot-air Balloon Ride (Caldecott Honor Book).
